75 Years Celebration of Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta (GCA) at Goldschmidt 2025
The organisers of the Goldschmidt conference publish a set of well-respected journals. The European Association of Geochemistry is the one that publishes the popular journals Geochemical Perspectives and Geochemical Perspectives Letters. The Geochemical Society, another host of this conference, is affiliated with the ‘Reviews in Mineralogy & Geochemistry (RiMG)‘ and ‘Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta‘.
The most exciting thing about the Goldschmidt conference is that it provides vast opportunities to interact with the publishers of these reputed international journals and members of their editorial boards.
In this Goldschmidt at Prague, the leading Geochemistry Journal ‘Geochemica et Cosmochimica Acta’ is celebrating its 75 years of publication. It publishes research papers in a wide range of subjects in terrestrial geochemistry, meteoritics, and planetary geochemistry.
Christina Gifford, on behalf of the publishing house (Elsevier) and the Executive Editor, Dr. Hailiang Dong, University of Geosciences Beijing, China, are present at this Goldschmidt. I went for an informal interaction with both of them.
Interaction with the Publisher and the Executive Editor

How many years have you been working for the GCA?
Christina: I have been overseeing GCA for 4 years and with Elsevier for 11 years
What’s the present IF of the GCA?
Christina: It’s 5.0 for the year 2024, which has been published by Clarivate Analytics in June 2025.
The IF got reduced in 2024. What do you feel is the reason for the drastic reduction of the IF?
Christina: A change in the IF calculation method is the cause, although it has significantly increased this year.
How many volumes do you publish in a year? How many issues have been published this year?
Christina: The journal publishes 2 issues monthly, so 14 issues have been published until June, with the two August issues in progress.
Any special program celebrating the 75-year journey in this Goldschmidt?
Christina: We are celebrating the anniversary with a 🧁 meet and greet event with the editor
Any other program from the Elsevier team exclusively organised to commemorate the 75-year journey of the GCA?
Christina: There will be a workshop on 10th July, 2025, Thursday, from 13:00 to 14:00, with the Elsevier team in the Chamber Hall (3rd Floor). In this session, I (Christina Gifford) and the Executive Editor Hailiang Dong from the journal Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta will provide information and answer questions on how to successfully publish your research, as well as how to handle the review process from both the reviewer and author perspectives.
How do you feel here?
Christina: It is a wonderful experience at Goldschmidt to interact with our readers, authors, reviewers and many more interested people. I feel overwhelmed by the response of the people. I am thrilled to share the joy of 75 years with all the attendees.
