1. Why was it important for you to participate in the event?

Working in the stable isotope laboratory

Participating in this short research stay at the Stable Isotope Laboratory of the Institute of Geological Sciences, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland was essential for the successful completion of my MSc project, which focuses on stable isotope geochemistry applied to the Late Eocene – Early Oligocene deposits. I prepared and analyzed carbonate sediments for δ¹³C and δ¹⁸O using Kiel IV and I gained experience with Delta Plus, GasBench II, and MAT 253 IRMS systems. I followed instructions for sample preparation, measurement, and data analysis, following the complete workflow of stable isotope analysis. This short research stay provided access to advanced analytical equipment and expertise that are not available at my home institution.

2. What was your overall experience of the event, both professionally and personally?

Overall, the experience was excellent both professionally and personally. With the support of EAG, I was able to complete my first experience in a stable isotope laboratory and perform analyses that were not available at my home institution.

From a professional perspective, I acquired practical laboratory skills, improved my understanding of isotope geochemistry, and benefited from direct interaction with experienced researchers. I am confident that this experience will greatly support my future academic and professional development.

On a personal level, the experience was extraordinary. With the support of EAG, I had my first opportunity to live and work in an international research environment. Daily laboratory work and teamwork strengthened my skills in communication, collaboration, networking, and time management.

3. What impact did attending this event have on your career?

The impact of this research stay on my career is both immediate and long-term. In the short term, I was able to analyze my samples and continue my project. During this research stay, I gained new insights into isotope geochemistry, including theory, definitions, standards, IRMS principles, and applications in paleoenvironmental research. I gained practical experience using Kiel IV, Delta Plus, GasBench II, and MAT 253 IRMS systems, performing complete workflows from sample preparation to measurement and data interpretation for δ¹³C and δ¹⁸O.

In the long term, this experience represents a crucial step toward my goal of pursuing a PhD in geology. It strengthened my academic profile, enhanced my research capabilities, and expanded my professional network. I anticipate that the skills and data obtained during this stay will contribute to future scientific publications.

4. What was your personal experience of the event?

My experience began with careful preparation, including reviewing isotope geochemistry theory and sample preparation. Traveling was smooth, and the accommodation allowed me to stay close to the laboratory, making daily laboratory work efficient.

During my research stay at the Stable Isotope Laboratory, the laboratory manager introduced me to the staff and equipment and provided mentorship in isotope geochemistry, covering theory, terminology, standards, and methods for sample preparation and measurement. I prepared and analyzed carbonate sediments for δ¹³C and δ¹⁸O using the Kiel IV system and gained experience with the Delta Plus, GasBench II, and MAT 253 IRMS systems. I also presented my research plans in a seminar, engaging in discussions with the institute’s researchers.

Following the complete workflow of stable isotope analysis – from sample preparation to measurement and data analysis, allowed me to develop practical skills and a strong understanding of laboratory discipline and time management. The research team warmly welcomed me, and working closely with them provided valuable insights into professional laboratory routines.

5. What did you enjoy the most at the event?

What I enjoyed most was the opportunity to continue the geochemical analyses for my project. Additionally, I particularly appreciated the collaborative environment of the laboratory. The openness of the researchers, their willingness to share knowledge, and the constructive scientific discussions created a very supportive and inspiring atmosphere.

6. What advice or tips would you offer to other students who are planning to attend this event?

I would strongly encourage future students to prepare thoroughly before their research stay, particularly by reviewing theoretical concepts and familiarizing themselves with the techniques they will use. Having a well-planned project and knowing exactly what they aim to achieve from their analyses will help them make the most of the limited time available. I recommend being open to new experiences, both academically and culturally. Mobility programs like the EAG student sponsorship are not only about research, they also foster personal growth, adaptability, and the development of an international scientific perspective.

Andrei Smeu is an MSc student in the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics of the University of Bucharest, Romania. His work focuses on sedimentary geology, and stable isotope geochemistry. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geological Engineering from the University of Bucharest. His current research aims to integrate stable isotope data with micropaleontological analyses to better understand paleoenvironmental changes and climate dynamics.
