Early Career Science Ambassador Igor Karlović makes a splash at IAH 2025

My attendance at the 52nd International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH 2025) Congress, supported by the EAG Early Career Science Ambassador Program, was highly beneficial for my academic and professional growth. As a researcher specializing in groundwater modeling and contaminant hydrogeology, my primary objectives were to present my recent findings to an international audience, gain critical feedback on methodological challenges, and identify potential collaborators to help progress my research beyond the scope of my home institution. The conference served as an ideal platform to achieve these goals, offering a dynamic environment for exchange and learning.
The conference was exceptionally well-organized and attracted over 800 participants from around the globe, which created a truly stimulating atmosphere. The scientific program was diverse, providing a valuable overview of the latest trends and developments in our field. A core part of my experience was presenting my research during the poster session, which featured more than 180 presentations. This format proved to be the most effective for having detailed conversations about my work and learning about the work of others. During the poster session, I engaged in meaningful discussions about my research with several interested scientists and younger colleagues working on similar topics. These interactions proved valuable for addressing current challenges and exploring potential solutions for my further research. Furthermore, these discussions laid the groundwork for future collaborations, and I exchanged contact information with several researchers whose work complements my own.

Personally, I enjoyed the chance to visit a new city and meet people in a more informal setting. Traveling to Melbourne was an adventure in itself, a 26-hour journey from my home, but the city’s superb location made it a fantastic venue. The conference organizers facilitated excellent social events, including a welcome reception, a field trip, and a networking dinner. These social gatherings were perfect for reconnecting with early career colleagues and establishing new contacts from around the world. In conclusion, the knowledge gained and the connections made at IAH 2025 will significantly benefit my ongoing scientific work. For future attendees, my advice is to prepare your presentation well, visit posters and other presentations and introduce yourself to people. Attending the social events is a good way to meet peers in a relaxed environment, as the most fruitful conversations often happen outside the lecture halls.
